Zohran Mamdani does not condemn Hamas following Netanyahu's promise to eliminate terrorists

Mayoral Candidate’s Stance on Hamas Sparks Controversy

Democratic mayoral hopeful Zoran Mamdani has chosen not to condemn Hamas, even when pressed to echo Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s call for action against the terrorist group and to secure the release of hostages remaining in the conflict.

Mamdani’s reluctance to criticize Hamas came after Netanyahu’s assertive speech to the UN General Assembly on Friday, where he stated that Israel must “finish their work” regarding the ongoing war with Hamas.

“I don’t want to mirror Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements,” Mamdani said to reporters later that day when asked if he concurred with Netanyahu’s characterization of Hamas as a terrorist organization that needs to be destroyed.

“But I can certainly share my perspective. My political ideology is rooted in universality, and the words of the families of hostages provide a powerful example.”

He expressed frustration with what he sees as Netanyahu’s misuse of hostages, arguing it endangered not only those held captive but also the lives of many Palestinians. “What really infuriates me, and many others in New York, is how this is justified,” Mamdani stated.

Netanyahu had previously warned that if terrorist groups were not eliminated, Hamas would likely continue to commit atrocities similar to those seen on October 7, 2023, all while refusing to acknowledge the existence of a Palestinian state.

Mamdani criticized Mayor Eric Adams for his presence during Netanyahu’s remarks, pointing out that while many representatives protested, Adams did not. “Our mayor has praised Netanyahu for safeguarding our way of life, yet we struggle to address the realities New Yorkers face,” he said.

Mamdani questioned the justification of violence, particularly noting the ongoing violence against children. “How can we excuse the murder of a child under the guise of defending our lifestyle? That’s not the life we want in this city.”

The leading candidate has expressed his support for the BDS movement, which advocates for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel. He has openly criticized Netanyahu and pledged to have the NYPD arrest the Israeli Prime Minister should he visit New York City.

Additionally, Mamdani has indicated he intends to challenge the International Holocaust Memory Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism, claiming it conflates anti-Semitic thoughts with criticism of Israel and Zionism.

The IHRA defines anti-Semitism as “a specific perception of Jews, which may manifest as hatred towards Jews.”

As the situation unfolds, Mamdani’s campaign seems to remain under scrutiny; however, a response to this latest round of criticism has yet to emerge.
