Zohran Mamdani receives endorsement from Jamaal Bowman in the NYC mayoral race.

Jamal Bowman’s Endorsement Sparks Controversy in Mayoral Race

On Wednesday, former Congressman Jamal Bowman endorsed Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist running for mayor, but the decision has drawn criticism, particularly regarding Bowman’s past affiliations. Bowman’s two terms representing the Bronx and Westchester County came to an end after he pleaded guilty to accidentally pulling a fire alarm at the Capitol to delay a vote aimed at preventing a government shutdown.

Despite this political turmoil, Mamdani embraced Bowman’s support, reflecting on the influence of their shared commitment to affordability for the working class. He also voiced criticism of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is a leading figure in the crowded Democratic primary.

“With Bowman’s backing, we can connect with more Bronx voters and shine a light on Cuomo’s record of failure and corruption,” Mamdani stated.

Bowman, who previously served the 16th Congressional District, is known for aligning with progressive figures like Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. He characterized Mamdani as a candidate for the working class and derided Cuomo as a corporate Democrat.

“Andrew Cuomo takes money from the same billionaires who support Donald Trump,” Bowman asserted, drawing a comparison between the two. “We have individuals like Trump and Cuomo who are out of touch with everyday people.”

In the 2024 Democratic primary, Bowman faced off against George Latimer, but the Bronx areas favored Mamdani, who is now a Queens councilor. He described Bowman’s endorsement as “historic” and a battle cry for not just the Bronx, but all of New York City.

However, some Jewish activists have called attention to Bowman’s past comments, accusing him of anti-Semitism and suggesting that this connection may alienate some voters from supporting Mamdani.

Brooklyn MP Kalman Eager remarked, “The anti-Semitic figures tend to gather support from each other, indicating something about their candidate.” Similarly, former Councillor David Greenfield criticized Mamdani for associating with Bowman, labeling him as one of the most anti-Israel politicians.

Though Bowman’s time in office was brief and marked by contention, he officially resigned after the incident involving the fire alarm incident in late 2023. He later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges and agreed to pay a fine, while offering an apology to Congress.

Jewish voters expressed dissatisfaction with Bowman following his critical statements about Israel, contributing to significant electoral losses. Additionally, he previously described Israel as an “apartheid state” and questioned reports of violence related to Hamas attacks.

Meanwhile, former politicians haven’t entirely exited the political scene. Earlier this year, Bowman established a super PAC aimed at advancing leftist candidates and opposing pro-Israel figures.

Recent polling from the Marist Institute indicated that 37% of Democrats support Cuomo, versus 18% backing Mamdani. Although Mamdani found favor among younger voters, Cuomo remained popular with older demographics and within black and Latino communities.
