New York City Mayor-elect Advocates for Immigrant Rights
Recently, Zoran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, shared a video on X, aimed at educating New Yorkers on how to respond to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
In the video, he emphasized the importance of knowing one’s rights and looking out for fellow community members. “New York is, and always will be, a city for all immigrants,” was his message.
The video addresses an incident where ICE targeted immigrants on Canal Street, underlining his commitment to protect the rights of all New Yorkers, especially the 3 million immigrants residing in the city.
Mamdani shared, “We can all stand up to ICE if we know our rights. If you encounter ICE, it’s crucial to understand a few key points.” He mentioned that ICE cannot enter private properties—like homes, schools, or workplaces—without a judicial warrant.
He explained further, “If they don’t have a signed warrant, you have the right to say, ‘I don’t consent to entry,’ and keep the door closed.” Mamdani showed what an official warrant looks like in the video.
Moreover, he noted, “ICE can legally lie, but you still have the right to remain silent. If detained, you can repeatedly ask, ‘Can I go?’ until you receive a response.” He added that ICE is permitted to record interactions, provided you don’t disrupt the arrest. Remaining calm during such encounters is essential to avoid escalating the situation.
As he wrapped up, Mamdani reiterated his commitment to safeguarding New Yorkers’ right to protest, affirming that New York City will always be a sanctuary for immigrants. “One last thought: New Yorkers have a constitutional right to protest, and I will ensure that right is upheld. This city will continue to welcome immigrants, and I will fight daily to protect and celebrate our immigrant community,” he concluded.
