Zohran Mamdani restates his push for higher taxes despite Gov. Hochul rejecting the proposal

Zoran Mamdani, the frontrunner for mayor, is pushing hard for increased taxes on businesses and wealthy individuals.

“Our plan aims to generate $9 billion, coupled with another $1 billion from potential savings and reforms within the city,” Mamdani stated during a rally in the Bronx alongside Healthcare Union workers in 1199 Seiu.

He proposed raising corporate taxes to align with neighboring states and advocated for tax hikes targeting the top 1 or 2% of earners in New York, which is central to the campaign of Queens’ lawmakers.

The socialist candidate argued that these funds would help cover initiatives like free bus services, childcare, and community-run food programs.

Mamdani also claims this plan could reduce overtime pay in the NYPD and has recently made a proposal valued at around $1 billion.

This initiative directly challenges Governor Kathy Hochul, who has promised not to raise taxes on New Yorkers.

Hochul opposed the new tax back in June, referencing the conventional Republican argument that higher taxes might drive wealthier individuals out of state.

Even though Hochul endorsed Mamdani recently, discussions about their cooperation have been scarce, particularly regarding the critical issue of taxation.

Mamdani has a significant lead in polling as the November 4th election approaches, outpacing rivals including Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent candidates like Mayor Eric Adams and former governor Andrew Cuomo.

Meanwhile, Hochul seems to be facing challenges in securing her position ahead of her 2026 re-election campaign, especially as she loses ground in suburban areas.

Critics suggest she may be counting on downstate voters to bolster her support for the upcoming election.
