Zohran Mamdani Says Unauthorized Immigrants Are 'New Yorkers'

New York’s Mayor’s Controversial Stance on Immigrants

Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York, who has immigrant roots, voiced strong feelings recently, emphasizing that criminal undocumented migrants should be regarded as New Yorkers despite prevailing federal immigration laws and public sentiment.

In a late Thursday post, he expressed his anger, stating:

“Today, ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker… ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.”

By taking this stance, Mamdani appears to be advocating for a shared civic identity that includes all foreigners entering the city, a notion increasingly accepted among some Democrats.

Born in Uganda, Mamdani became a citizen after moving to the U.S. at seven, thanks to his immigrant parents. He leveraged his citizenship to ascend to the mayor’s office, uniting a diverse coalition comprising migrants, Muslims, progressives, and various ethnic groups.

In response, Homeland Security Chief Markwayne Mullin criticized Mamdani’s position:

“He refers to Oscar [Bergdahl] as a ‘New Yorker.’ But he’s from the Dominican Republic. He came here legally a few years ago and has since committed numerous crimes.”

Mullin added that records suggest Bergdahl may have only been in the country for three years and has a significant criminal history. He questioned Mamdani’s definition of a “New Yorker.”

Mamdani has consistently labeled New York as an amnesty or “sanctuary city,” offering protection and resources to many undocumented migrants, which critics argue imposes significant costs on everyday New Yorkers. These migrants, according to some, help stabilize the city’s population and property market amidst governmental challenges, while also creating an extensive pool of low-cost labor.

The rhetoric from Mamdani raises eyebrows, especially as he juggles the interests of his diverse coalition alongside the necessity of maintaining economic stability by not driving out local job creators.

The individual injured in the police incident, whom Mamdani supports, is an undocumented migrant from the Dominican Republic with a troubling criminal record, reportedly established after being welcomed by the Biden administration.

On Friday, Mullin firmly stated that the federal government would uphold its laws in New York:

“I talked to the mayor several times last night. He wanted us to release this individual back onto the streets. We will be happy to do so if the NYPD wants to pursue charges against him.”

Mullin expressed that once again, the mayor was unresponsive during a recent incident where a police officer was stabbed by criminals released back into the community. He noted that Mamdani seemed oblivious to the outrage witnessed following that attack.

“Our role is to enforce the nation’s laws and target the worst offenders, and our agents do an excellent job at it consistently,” Mullin emphasized.
