Zohran Mamdani Shares 'Strangest Experience' From Meeting With Trump

Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s Productive Meeting with President Trump

Democratic New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani expressed on Monday that his meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House was, without a doubt, very productive.

Mamdani’s visit on Friday involved amicable discussions with Trump about collaborative efforts on various issues impacting New York City. During a conversation on the Adam Friedland Show, Mamdani reflected on the meeting, mentioning that he and Trump talked about some of the challenges the city is facing.

When asked by Friedland if Trump had shown him anything unusual, Mamdani shared, “He showed me the portraits of all the presidents in the cabinet room. F.D.R. It was beautiful. We discussed FDR a bit, you know. Without FDR, there wouldn’t be LaGuardia records. So, we talked about that,” he added, implying a more personal connection through historical context.

Mamdani noted that the meeting was the “most productive” experience he had ever had. They discussed pressing issues like grocery prices, childcare costs, and rent—topics that are impacting the everyday lives of many Americans.

“It felt like the most productive meeting I’ve ever had,” Mamdani explained. “We talked about groceries, rent, childcare—the essentials people are really struggling with.”

President Trump told reporters he aimed to keep the atmosphere friendly during the discussion. However, when Mamdani was asked about Trump’s characterization as a fascist, he hesitated but acknowledged that the president could be viewed that way. Trump responded affirmatively, agreeing with Mamdani on various issues, including affordability and crime.

Interestingly, Mamdani mentioned that even some New Yorkers who supported Trump highlighted the high cost of living as a significant concern, showing their readiness to work together on reducing these challenges.

Despite this meeting, both figures have had a contentious history, trading barbs in public. Mamdani had even dubbed a campaign trip “Five Boroughs Against Trump,” while Trump has labeled him a “communist” and threatened legal action should Mamdani pursue policies that obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.

Mamdani has also promised ambitious plans, including a $30 minimum wage, a freeze on rents, and the establishment of government-operated grocery stores and transportation. In a prior appearance before the Young Democratic Socialists of America, he emphasized that socialism’s aim is to “control the means of production.”
