Meta Shares AI Technology with Allies
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is making strides in sharing its technological advancements with partners in Europe and NATO. Since late 2024, the company has provided access to Llama, a distinctive large-scale language model, to nations included in the Five Eyes security alliance, which consists of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Now, Meta is extending its reach further by collaborating with advanced AI military contractors.
Wearable technology, AI applications, and various tools are being distributed to allies in countries like France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and South Korea. The goal? To improve “decision-making, mission-specific capabilities, and operational efficiency,” according to Mehta.
The technologies include a partnership formed with Anduril, known for its cutting-edge augmented reality defense innovations. Mehta has characterized this collaboration as “the largest of its kind,” aiming to provide soldiers with enhanced decision-making tools. A prime example is the newly launched EagleEye AI/AR fighter helmet.
EagleEye boasts features reminiscent of high-tech gaming gear. While it provides directional mapping, it’s essentially designed to offer a unique form of visibility, allowing users to identify allies and enemies on the battlefield.
Though its capabilities are impressive, like spatial audio alerts that signal hidden threats, it also employs sensors to safeguard against ambushes. Anduril’s Lattice AI has gained traction as a topic of interest, particularly among gamers. The system creates dynamic 3D maps of battlefields utilizing data from drones, sensors, and satellites, addressing issues like border security intrusions.
In November 2024, Meta opened the Llama model for development by the U.S. military and its associated contractors. This decision has begun to bear fruit, especially with Meta’s provision of a chatbot designed for soldiers, developed in partnership with EdgeRunner.
EdgeRunner AI essentially functions as a search tool for military personnel, operable on standard consumer devices. It can facilitate location identification for aircraft or assist in language translation. An EdgeRunner representative stated, “This is all part of a joint effort to ensure warfighters have access to advanced AI technology at the tactical cutting edge.” They emphasized that the AI would run locally, meaning it operates independently of cloud servers, thereby protecting sensitive information from adversaries.
The overarching ambition of this AI initiative is to maintain versatility across different operations, integrating logistics, maintenance, and combat roles. Meta has stated that as it expands globally, it expects its allies to deploy AI in an ethical manner, compliant with international laws and foundational principles.
