Georgia State Police arrested non-citizen immigrant According to one report, the suspect in the murder of a nursing student had previously been released due to “lack of detention space.”
Laken Riley, 22, a student at Augusta University’s College of Nursing, went for a jog Thursday but did not return home. Her roommate called the police and she reported her missing.
Around 12:30 p.m., police found her bludgeoned body on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, later determining that she had died from blunt force trauma.
On Friday, University of Georgia Police Chief Jeff Clark said: Said Reporters announced at a press conference that 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra had been arrested for murder.
“He didn’t know her at all,” Clark said. “I believe this was a crime of opportunity.”
Clark said Ybarra is not a U.S. citizen and appears to be an immigrant from Venezuela. The man reportedly lived in an apartment near where the woman’s body was discovered.
He went on to say that police used surveillance video and physical evidence to identify Mr. Ybarra as a suspect. They also executed a search warrant on his home.

Clark said Ybarra was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, interfering with a 911 call and concealing the death of another person. He was booked into the Clark County Jail.
Police said it was the first murder on campus in at least 30 years.
