1 Dead, 1 Injured In Avalanche At California Ski Resort

An avalanche has reportedly killed one person and seriously injured another at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in California's Olympic Valley.

On Wednesday morning, authorities announced that a powerful snowstorm with strong winds had moved into the region. An avalanche suddenly tore through an expert-grade trail area at a California ski resort near Lake Tahoe, killing one person and injuring another.

Thirty minutes after the ski resort opened to the public, Palisades Tahoe was forced to close due to an avalanche. Rescue teams searched the area to see if anyone was injured or trapped.

Hours later, Placer County Sheriff's Office Sgt. David Smith announced that “one man has died” and another “suffered non-life-threatening injuries.” Smith did not report whether the injured person was a man or a woman and did not release either person's name.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on a steep ski slope near the KT-22 lift on the “Black Diamond” runway.

“One person was killed and another injured in the avalanche.” The Placer County Sheriff's Office said in an update. Immediately after the avalanche occurred.

“One person was killed and another injured in the avalanche. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this difficult time. No further people are reported missing. Over 100 people. Palisades personnel participated in the beacon search and two search lines were completed…,'' the statement said.

Palisades Tahoe announced the tragic news in a statement on the X, saying all of the resort's mountain slopes will be closed for the remainder of the day.

On Tuesday, the storm reached 160 mph on mountain peaks near Lake Tahoe, and strong storms moving into the area are estimated to dump as much as 2 feet of snow at higher elevations by Thursday.

The National Weather Service also announced that 2 inches of snow could fall in an hour in areas near famous ski resorts.

The resort hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.
