Tragic Mass Shooting in Montana: A Young Girl’s Heroic Attempt to Save Family

A 12-year-old girl is being celebrated as a hero following a tragic shooting that claimed the lives of eight family members, including four children, during a dinner gathering in Montana.

The incident occurred near Billings, where a man opened fire on his family. This act of violence reportedly came shortly after his parents had asked him to leave their home.

Authorities state that the shooter, identified as 44-year-old Alan Smith, killed several relatives including his grandmother, parents, and younger sister.

According to reports, the victims included 73-year-old Dana Smith and 72-year-old Barbara Smith, who were the homeowners. Their daughter, 39-year-old Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, along with her two children and two stepchildren—15-year-old Landon Ghekiere, 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere, 13-year-old Owen Ireland, and 7-year-old Chloe Ireland—were also among those who lost their lives.

Interim Sheriff Kent O’Donnell described Evelyn Smith, Dana’s 92-year-old mother and the family matriarch, as a dedicated presence at family gatherings; she was visiting for dinner on that fateful Sunday.

Megan’s ex-husband, Brad Ireland, identified Alan Smith as the shooter and expressed concerns about his brother-in-law’s isolated behavior. He mentioned that no one really knew what Alan did while living in their parents’ house.

“It’s as if there were many red flags, but no one was listening,” Ireland noted, reflecting on the unsettling circumstances surrounding Smith.

Witness accounts indicate that Smith arrived at the family home around 5:49 p.m., shortly before neighbors reported what they initially thought were fireworks. Police responded to a call from a female inside the house just before 6:10 p.m.

Upon arrival, law enforcement confronted Smith outside, but he retreated back into the house. O’Donnell reported hearing more gunfire from within before Smith fled to a rear area of the property.

Around 6:13 p.m., some law enforcement reported a final shot. By about 6:22 p.m., deputies entered the backyard where they found a man with a gunshot wound and initiated lifesaving efforts, not realizing at first that he was the shooter. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Firefighters struggled to manage the ensuing blaze at the home, which burned for hours into Monday morning, largely due to the location’s lack of available firefighting hydrants.

Adam Ghekiere, the widower of Megan, was not present during the shooting. He learned of the events through police communications and, upon arriving, discovered his family’s home engulfed in flames. Tragically, he found out that several of his loved ones were among the fatalities.

It emerged later that Charlotte dialed 911 during the chaos in a desperate attempt to save her family, earning her the title of “hero” in the aftermath, as described by neighbors and community members.

O’Donnell acknowledged that the Sheriff’s Office had never been called to Smith’s residence prior to this tragedy. A background check on Alan Smith revealed that he had no previous criminal record.
