Democrat Governors Form New Health Alliance
A coalition of Democrat governors has introduced a health initiative aimed at enhancing public health coordination, seemingly in response to actions taken by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The Governors Public Health Alliance now comprises leaders from 14 states, including notable figures from California, New York, and Illinois. This new endeavor aims to serve as a “non-partisan hub” for public health efforts across the nation.
- California: Gavin Newsom
- Colorado: Jared Polis
- Connecticut: Ned Lamont
- Delaware: Matt Meyer
- Guam: Lou Leon Guerrero
- Hawaii: Josh Green
- Illinois: JB Pritzker
- Maryland: Wes Moore
- Massachusetts: Maura Healey
- New Jersey: Phil Murphy
- New York: Kathy Hochul
- North Carolina: Josh Stein
- Oregon: Tina Kotek
- Rhode Island: Dan McKee
- Washington: Bob Ferguson
Guam is represented in the alliance by Governor Guerrero, who is also affiliated with the Democrat Party.
This coalition aims to “strengthen emergency preparedness, improve communication, share data and expertise, and ensure states and territories can respond quickly to emerging health threats.”
While branding itself as non-partisan, the alliance consists solely of Democrat governors.
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York explained that the formation of this coalition is a direct reaction to “the assaults on science and medicine coming out of Washington.” She emphasized the importance of ongoing support for scientific research and access to vaccinations.
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom expressed pride in launching the alliance, prioritizing a public health system that prioritizes science over politics. He voiced concern over what he described as extremist efforts to misuse data and misinformation.
This coalition seems to be a counter to the directives and updated guidance being issued by Secretary Kennedy, particularly regarding vaccines geared towards bolstering public health. Recently, Kennedy had reconfigured the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, adding new members to align with his vision for vaccine transparency.
“A clean sweep is necessary to reestablish public confidence in vaccine science,” Kennedy noted, referring to prior failures of the committee during the pandemic. He assured that new members would prioritize public health over industry profit.
In response, an HHS spokesperson stated that Kennedy’s agency bases its decisions on “rigorous evidence and Gold Standard Science,” contrasting that with the actions taken by Democrat leaders during the pandemic.
The spokesperson also pointed out that past Democrat leadership had damaged public trust by promoting “unscientific school lockdowns, toddler mask mandates, and draconian vaccine passports.”
The new coalition has enlisted Dr. Mandy Cohen, former CDC Director, as an advisor. She commented on the need for states to continue coordinating efforts in light of persisting health threats.
“The health threats have not gone away,” she remarked, stressing the importance of sharing best practices moving forward.
