Illinois couple tragically loses children in Wisconsin lake during unusual storm, despite being skilled boaters

In a heartbreaking incident, an Illinois couple lost their two young children when their boat capsized during a severe storm on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. Friends and officials noted that the family were highly experienced boaters.

Caleb Oswald, aged 6, and his 7-year-old sister Abigail were described as “best friends, more than brother and sister,” by their father, Brad, on a crowdfunding page.

Brad shared that their lives were filled with joy, music, hugs, and endless love. “They were cherished by family, friends, teachers, and everyone lucky enough to know them,” he wrote.

Authorities released the children’s identities this week, stating they drowned without any apparent signs of trauma, following a sudden and intense storm that struck Walworth County on July 3.

With winds reaching speeds of 90 to 100 miles per hour, the boat overturned, resulting in the deaths of six adults and one child, along with an unnamed 10-year-old girl.

Local law enforcement mentioned that the 47-year-old operator of the boat had significant experience but could not find shelter from the approaching storm.

In the wake of the tragedy, it was noted that “they were lifelong experienced boaters, operating within the boat’s capacity, and each child was wearing a life jacket.”

As large waves hit the 25-foot boat, a third wave ultimately capsized it, causing it to sink.

By Wednesday afternoon, over $110,000 had been raised via the crowdfunding effort, but the Oswalds plan to share the contributions. They intend to donate the funds “to assist children and families through charities, ensuring that the memory of Caleb and Abigail lives on in a meaningful way.”
