Tragic Death of a Louisville Teen

A high school student in Louisville was shot and killed by a teenage assailant, only three months after he was stabbed while defending a young girl from harassment.

Dajon Hayes Barr, 15, succumbed to gunshot wounds Saturday evening in Louisville’s Shawnee neighborhood. His family described the act as “tragic and senseless.”

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder related to the incident.

Hayes Barr, who was set to enter his sophomore year, had previously intervened to protect a 12-year-old girl, Bristol Stazel, who was allegedly being harassed by 45-year-old Vasilis Sakelaridis at an air show in April. Reports indicate that Sakelaridis made inappropriate comments, prompting Hayes Barr to step in, leading to the girl yelling “pedophile.”

Along with friends, Hayes Barr confronted Sakelaridis, attempting to subdue him.

“There was pure evil in his eyes—I can still picture it,” expressed Stazel’s mother, Christine.

During the clash, Sakelaridis is said to have stabbed Hayes Barr in the stomach, but this did not overshadow the praise he received for his courageous actions. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear even acknowledged him with a letter and a challenge coin for his bravery.

After recovering from his injuries, Hayes Barr explained his motivations: “Now that I have a younger sister, I wanted someone to help me if something were to happen to her.”

Stazel’s mother shared her gratitude, stating she wished to make a bracelet for Hayes Barr to honor his bravery.

“I was shocked to hear that a 15-year-old, older than my daughter, was hurt,” said Christine. “Another kid was injured protecting my child. He was risking his life, and for that, I’m forever grateful.”

According to police reports, Sakelaridis was found to have brass knuckles and appeared intoxicated during the incident, causing alarm among onlookers.

Following the announcement of Hayes Barr’s death, Governor Beshear initiated a memorial for him, expressing condolences and recognizing Hayes Barr’s impact on the community.

A fundraiser has been set up to support Hayes Barr’s mother, Laquita, with friends remembering him as a “wonderful young man whose courage and kindness touched everyone.” They reflected on how his bright future was, sadly, cut short.

In relation to the earlier stabbing incident, Sakelaridis faced a variety of charges, including assault and public intoxication, and he pleaded not guilty in his arraignment.
