Government officials are remaining silent about a new series of secret graveyards used by drug cartels that may contain up to 170 bodies in Mexico’s Colima state. Local news outlets claim government officials have refused to discuss the findings, insisting on election time limits.
The mass graves appear to have been created this week or in the past few days. Details of the incident remain unclear due to a lack of public information from authorities. The mass grave was discovered by state and federal authorities in Colima Noticias, Istrahuacan city, Colima state. report.
The US State Department currently lists Colima as a state to avoid due to widespread violence. The region has a strong presence of gunmen from the Jalisco New Generation cartel and small independent organizations.
Crime scene technicians searched the scene and recovered numerous bodies. However, government officials have not released the numbers. Colima Noticias, excelsior, la jornada, and other Mexican news outlets, citing government sources, point out that as many as 170 bodies have been recovered from various graves at the site so far. This particular cemetery discovery could be one of the biggest in recent years.
The cartel’s use of mass graves is very prevalent in various regions of Mexico. Cartels support this practice because it attracts less attention over time, and government officials benefit from this practice because it does not affect murder statistics. These cases are typically filed as missing persons.
