Tragic Incident in the Bronx
A 19-year-old man from the Bronx is facing serious accusations after allegedly striking his girlfriend’s one-year-old daughter in the head. Unfortunately, the child required a ventilator following the incident and was pronounced dead about a week later.
The baby, Imani Mitchell, was taken to Harlem Hospital after the alleged assault on August 28. Jerome Thomas, who was responsible for her care at the time, reportedly hit her twice on the side of her head, according to statements from the police and prosecution.
Imani suffered severe brain injuries, including extensive epidural hemorrhage, which led to a significant increase in intracranial pressure and required emergency surgery to remove part of her skull. Despite being placed on a ventilator and receiving other life support measures, she tragically passed away at the hospital this past Friday.
Thomas was arrested the day after the assault and charged with felony assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities have indicated he will remain in custody on Rikers Island, as he may face upgraded charges.
Notably, Thomas is not the biological father of the child. The alleged attack occurred around 9:30 p.m. on the night of the incident, in their apartment located near Union Avenue.
Imani’s mother, Lenesha Mitchell, reported that upon returning from a short shopping trip, she found her daughter semi-conscious with significant injuries to her face. Several neighbors mentioned that they had heard frequent arguments coming from the couple’s apartment since they moved in.
In lighter moments, one neighbor recounted her experiences with Imani, noting that despite everything, the little girl had been lively and playful. However, the unsettling atmosphere in the building left many in the community concerned.
The community reaction has been one of outrage and sorrow. Many took to social media to express their disbelief at the tragic turn of events, with some comments reflecting anger towards the accused.
In response to this heartbreaking case, Kristina Coleman from Safe Horizon offered advice for those who might face similarly troubling situations. She stressed the importance of recognizing warning signs and supporting one another as a community.
Thomas is scheduled to appear in court again on September 18.
