Georgia taxpayers may soon receive surplus tax refund checks, as announced by state officials this week.
This marks the third round of surplus payments during Governor Brian Kemp’s administration.
Most individuals who filed their 2023 and 2024 tax returns on time should anticipate a refund in the next few weeks.
The Georgia Department of Revenue indicated that those who filed by the May 1 deadline can expect their checks about six to eight weeks after the submission.
Are You Qualified?
To qualify for the refund, taxpayers must have filed both returns and made payments without owing any debts to the state Department of Revenue.
The refund amount will vary based on tax liability from the 2023 tax year.
- Single filers and married individuals filing separately will receive $250.
- Heads of households will get $375.
- Married couples filing jointly are eligible for $500.
Why Are You Getting This Money?
House Bill 112, passed during the 2025 legislative session by Governor Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly, authorized these surplus payments. The bill allocated $1 billion for tax refunds to qualifying households.
Kemp has commended the efficient management of state resources.
“We’ve been careful with state funds, allowing us to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how to use it best,” he stated.
The General Assembly also enacted House Bill 111, which lowered Georgia’s income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%.
This adjustment is part of a broader initiative to accelerate tax reductions initiated by Governor Kemp in 2022.
“Accelerating the largest income tax reduction in the state’s history, along with this refund, supports our citizens and their businesses, as this money belongs to them, not the government,” Kemp added.
How Do You Receive a Rebate?
Taxpayers expecting a refund will receive it either through direct deposit or by check, depending on their filing method.
According to Georgia law, refunds are not considered taxable income, meaning interest will not be added to these payments.
How Can I Check the Status of a Refund?
Governor Kemp’s office has indicated that taxpayers can verify their eligibility for the surplus refund using the designated tool.
You’ll need to provide your Social Security number or tax ID, along with your federally adjusted gross income, which can be found on Form 500 or Form 500EZ for your 2023 tax return.
You can check your status through the appropriate online resource.
