Gubernatorial Elections in New Jersey and Virginia

New Jersey and Virginia are unique in that they alone hold gubernatorial elections the year following a presidential election. These elections typically draw significant national interest and are viewed by political analysts as critical indicators for the upcoming midterm elections for the U.S. House and Senate.

This year’s 2025 gubernatorial elections are especially significant as they represent an early challenge for former President Donald Trump’s second-term ambitions. Interestingly, they provide Democrats with a chance for redemption after their disappointing outcomes last year when they lost the White House, the Senate, and failed to regain the House majority.

Races to Watch

In two open races for governor, Democrats are striving to reclaim the Virginia governorship and retain control of the New Jersey office. It’s a pivotal moment for the party, potentially setting the stage for future contests.

According to Chris Moyer, a seasoned Democratic strategist, the 2025 elections serve as a “test case” on issues surrounding the cost of living, particularly as affordability was a strong point for Trump and the Republican Party in the previous elections. “This is an opportunity to reconsider how to frame the cost-of-living debate,” Moyer remarked, highlighting rising healthcare and utility costs as key topics.

On the Republican side, Ryan Williams, a veteran strategist, views this campaign as somewhat separate from typical election patterns, suggesting that results in New Jersey and Virginia don’t necessarily forecast midterm trends. “By the time midterm elections come around, many have moved on from these gubernatorial outcomes,” he explained.

Nonetheless, Williams pointed out that if Republican candidate Jack Ciatarelli were to win in normally Democratic New Jersey, it could signify a shift toward Trump and the GOP in areas typically dominated by Democrats.
