The competition for the Golden Boot award is heating up as we approach the final stretch of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With just four matches left, the pressure is definitely on.
Kylian Mbappé of France has surged back to the top after netting a goal in his team’s quarter-final victory against Morocco. He’s currently tied with Lionel Messi, both having scored eight goals, but Mbappé edges out due to having more assists.
On the other hand, Messi had several opportunities but couldn’t capitalize, as Argentina’s contentious 3-1 win against Switzerland ended without him scoring, keeping the door open for the semi-finals.
Erling Haaland from Norway stands out as a major loser in this race. After a disappointing defeat to England, where his scoring drought of seven games ended, he will now be watching from home while others compete for the prestigious top scorer title.
Meanwhile, England now boasts two serious contenders. Jude Bellingham scored two goals recently, bringing him up to six, which ties him with team captain Harry Kane. Ousmane Dembélé of France also quietly made his mark with a goal, scoring France’s fifth.
The current standings for the Golden Boot after the quarter-finals are:

6 goals
- Jude Bellingham, UK
- Harry Kane, UK
