Tragic Loss of California Police Officer
A police officer in California lost her life this week while responding to a collision on Interstate 8 in San Diego. Officer Lauren Craven, who was just 25 years old and celebrated her birthday earlier this month on October 7, was tragically struck by a vehicle on Sunday, October 20th.
The La Mesa Police Department experienced its first line-of-duty death with the passing of Officer Craven, who joined the force in February of last year and worked in the Patrol Division.
On the evening of Monday, after 10 p.m., Officer Craven was returning from the San Diego Central Jail when she encountered a multi-vehicle rollover accident on the freeway, located northeast of San Diego and west of La Mesa. She quickly reported the crash via radio, but without waiting for formal dispatch, she exited her patrol vehicle to help those involved.
Sadly, an approaching vehicle struck her at the scene. The driver of the overturned car, 19-year-old De’Veonte Morris, was also killed, as confirmed by his family, as reported by NBC 7 San Diego.
The incident involved five vehicles in total, with the initial crash causing a chain reaction. While several others sustained injuries, details regarding the extent or number of injuries have not been released publicly.
“This is a very tragic situation, and it’s very difficult for all involved,” stated La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney during a briefing. “My heartfelt condolences go out to the La Mesa Police Department, our law enforcement colleagues, and the loved ones of all those who lost their lives in this incident,” he added.
“Officer Craven’s actions reflect her dedication to public service and the safety of others. This was how she lived every day,” mentioned the La Mesa Police Department on their Facebook page. “She was recognized for her courage, tenacity, and compassion—traits that inspired many and strengthened her community.”
The San Diego Sheriff, Kelly Martinez, shared thoughts on social media, emphasizing Officer Craven’s bravery and commitment to serving others, noting that these values are the essence of law enforcement. She offered support to Officer Craven’s family, friends, and the La Mesa Police Department during this difficult time.
Law enforcement officials from various departments across California are mourning the young officer’s loss. This includes the California Highway Patrol, the San Diego District Attorney’s Office, and other police departments such as those in Riverside County and Sacramento.
According to her father, David Craven, Officer Craven was inspired to join law enforcement after experiencing a traumatic event in college. During this time, a kind detective provided her with compassion, which had a lasting impact.
“Lauren recognized the difference that made in her life and decided right then, ‘I want to dedicate my life to being that good cop for anyone who needs me,’” her father said, reflecting on her motivation.
