300 students from Woodbridge High School suspended for protesting against ICE

Last week, a high school in Virginia suspended over 300 students who left campus during a student-organized anti-ICE protest. Woodbridge High School imposed three-day suspensions on 303 students after they walked out to “voice their opinions” against federal immigration enforcement, according to Principal Dr. Heather Abney in a letter sent to parents.

The protest, which did not have the backing of Prince William County Public Schools, extended from the school grounds to the streets, prompting local police to manage traffic and oversee the large group of protesting students.

In her letter, Abney acknowledged that while such walkouts can help students express their concerns on significant issues, leaving campus unapproved during school hours goes against district policies.

After the protest, reports stated that some students returned home, others went to a local shopping center, and a few came back to school, where disturbances were noted among some students.

“We appreciate your partnership as we focus on keeping students safe while maintaining clear behavior expectations,” she wrote.

Despite the suspensions, students in the district indicated their intent to organize another walkout. A student-run Instagram account promoted a campaign to “abolish” U.S. immigration enforcement, asserting that the government was aware of their actions and participants would not face repercussions.

A post from a week prior encouraged participants with a message saying, “Welcome to Prince William County Schools ICE OUT,” declaring it was time to take action.

Plans for a countywide strike on February 20 were discussed in a recent social media post, detailing how procedures and gathering locations might change slightly by campus. It also emphasized that all administrators were informed about the upcoming protest, assuring participants of their safety. The account urged students to remain peaceful and stay on school premises during the demonstration.
