Tragic Incident in Shreveport: Eight Children Killed

On Sunday morning, a 31-year-old man shot and killed eight children in Shreveport, Louisiana. Authorities reported that seven of the victims were his own children. The shooter, identified as Shamar Elkins, was killed following a police pursuit.

Family members later shared that Elkins had been struggling with mental health issues and had voiced suicidal thoughts shortly before the incident. Reports indicated that the children, ranging in age from 1 to 14, were shot execution-style.

In addition to the children, Elkins also fatally shot two adults, including his wife, who suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized.

After the shooting, Elkins reportedly stole a car, prompting a police chase where officers ultimately shot and killed him. There remains some uncertainty about whether he died from police gunfire or his own weapon.

“This is probably the worst tragic situation we’ve ever seen,” remarked Shreveport Mayor Tom Arsenault.

The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed, but relatives mentioned that Elkins had been facing substantial stress in his relationship. In an emotional call to his mother earlier in the month, he expressed feelings of despair and mentioned that his wife was seeking a divorce.

Elkins had at least two prior convictions related to drunk driving and weapon offenses, with records detailing a 2019 incident where he fired shots at a moving vehicle.

His mother, who had a complicated relationship with him due to her struggles with addiction in her youth, stated that she was unaware of the depth of the issues affecting him. Elkins served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020, but did not experience deployment.

The community remains in shock, grappling with the enormity of the loss. One family member shared heart-wrenching feelings of disbelief and emotional pain, saying, “My baby, my baby is gone.”
