Brock Purdy allowed san francisco 49ers To do some pretty great things both on the field and on the roster.

But Mr. Irrelevant will soon be getting paid, and 49ers CEO Jed York has no problem with that.

“It’s a good problem to have when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid players on your team and in the league,” York told reporters at Tuesday’s game. NFL Owners Conference, From Mercury News.

York spoke at length about relying on building his roster through the draft rather than free agency. In contrast to free agency, this system worked well when the 49ers used their last pick in the draft. 2022 NFL Draft Purdy has been signed to a rookie contract that will earn him just under $1 million this season.

Purdy led the 49ers to back-to-back wins in the NFC Championship and Super Bowl. His unexpected success will likely mean a big contract when he becomes eligible for an extension at the end of the 2024 season, and York knows that.

“That’s the way the market is. The block is going to ask for things that no one has asked for before,” he said. “I don’t know how many players are making more than $40 million (a year) as a quarterback right now.”

In his first full year as the starting QB, Purdy threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns, and scored two more touchdowns.

York signed a five-year, $137.5 million contract with the Niners. jimmy garoppolo As an example of their desire to secure the quarterback position in 2018, he became the highest-paid player in the league at the time.

“For me, the quarterback is the most important position, not just in football, but in all of sports, and they should be paid a lot of money.”
