49ers defeat Eagles with Christian McCaffrey scoring twice

NFC Wild Card Recap

The San Francisco 49ers pulled off a solid win on the road, edging out the defending Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, with a score of 23-19 in the wild card round. This victory propels them into the playoffs.

Next up, the 49ers will take on their NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, who are sitting pretty as the number one seed in the NFC this year.

On the flip side, the Eagles’ season came to a surprising end. They were in a good position, just shy of the red zone with under a minute left in the fourth quarter.

The match turned out to be closely contested again, reminiscent of their previous wild card game. It felt like whoever had the ball last might just clinch the game.

However, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts faced pressure. He was unable to find DeVonta Smith on a crucial third-and-11, leading to a pivotal fourth down. He scanned the field and targeted tight end Dallas Goedert, who notched a pair of touchdowns during the game. Yet, 49ers linebacker Eric Kendricks read the situation perfectly, intercepting the ball and sealing the deal for San Francisco with only 43 seconds left.

Before this decisive moment, quarterback Brock Purdy and the 49ers’ offense managed to respond to an Eagles field goal, which had pushed the Eagles ahead to 19-17. In reply, Purdy drove the team down the field, completing a 10-play, 66-yard drive and helping to bring the score to 23-19 after McCaffrey scored on a third-and-goal. It was a bit of a scramble when Eddie Pineiro missed the extra point following that touchdown.

Interestingly, McCaffrey’s most outstanding play came earlier in the fourth quarter via a trick play. It involved Purdy flipping the ball to Jauan Jennings, who then tossed it to McCaffrey for a nifty 29-yard touchdown pass. McCaffrey made an impressive catch, reminiscent of a previous Super Bowl where he threw a pass for the 49ers.

Throughout the game, both defenses stood strong. Both quarterbacks made their share of errors. Purdy’s two interceptions were notably snagged by All-Pro cornerback Kunyon Mitchell.

While Saquon Barkley had a productive day, racking up 106 yards on 26 carries, Hurts struggled to find yardage, only managing 14 yards on five attempts. McCaffrey was also held to 48 yards on 15 carries, despite being a key player in the passing game with six catches for 66 yards. DeMarcus Robinson contributed as well, leading the 49ers with six receptions for just 11 yards.

However, the 49ers might face challenges moving forward, as star tight end George Kittle likely suffered a torn Achilles during the game, a significant loss for the team given his leadership and performance.

This win sets up the 49ers for the divisional round, with other matchups also brewing, including the Los Angeles Rams heading to Chicago to face the Bears after their surprising win against the Green Bay Packers.
