A Texas pastor recently stirred considerable interest by challenging couples living together during a sermon, leading many from his congregation to volunteer for a mass wedding.
Pastor Josh Howerton, from Lake Point Church in Dallas, spoke passionately toward the end of his sermon on February 22 about the biblical views on marriage, divorce, and remarriage, weaving in themes of grace and truth.
He recognized that for some in attendance, this might have been their first exposure to what the Bible says regarding marriage and intimacy.
“We’re connecting with a lot of young people right now, which is fantastic. We really appreciate it,” he remarked about the church’s growing community.
However, he noted that “many” attendees seemed unsure of their next steps.
“You might be living with someone you’re not married to, or maybe you’re involved with someone else and considering starting a family. Now, you’re feeling the Holy Spirit’s urging to make a commitment— to enter a covenant that honors God,” Howerton explained.
He stressed the encouragement behind his call, sharing a saying from his church: “The only time you look down on someone is when you’re reaching out to help them.”
“We’re ready for a mass wedding. I truly mean it,” he declared.
After sharing a text number for those interested, he discovered that numerous couples expressed their willingness to participate. Howerton mentioned, “We’ll guide you, counsel you, help you prepare for the ceremony. And we’ll celebrate it all with you.” He assured them they wouldn’t be judged but rather supported through their journey of obedience to their faith.
About two weeks later, on March 6, the mass wedding took place with many couples present.
“If this doesn’t move you in some way, maybe it’s time to check in with yourself,” he shared on Facebook. “These 52 couples felt a conviction to marry in God’s honor after a sermon, and they took that step tonight.”
He concluded, “52 couples, 52 families— legacies changed, forever.”
The event drew significant participation from the church’s community.
“Over 1,000 people came to support them!” the pastor proclaimed.
