Massive Brawl at Hersheypark Results in Legal Charges for Over 50 Minors
More than 50 children and teenagers have faced charges following a significant fight on the opening day of Hersheypark, which caused families to scramble for safety, including hiding under tables.
On April 3, a total of 55 individuals, comprising 53 minors aged between 12 and 19, were involved in several altercations within Pennsylvania’s well-known theme park. This information was shared by the Derry County Sheriff’s Office. Details regarding the incident were released on Monday.
The charges against those involved span both misdemeanors and felonies.
Authorities noted that two distinct groups, referred to as Group A and Group B, were observed arguing in a corner of the park shortly before the situation escalated into a widespread brawl at around 6:51 p.m., just over an hour before the park was set to close.
Police were summoned to manage the chaotic scene near the family-oriented Trailblazer coaster.
As the groups dispersed, they reunited at the food court, which led families to take cover and flee the area, according to reports. Witnesses claimed the brawl involved approximately 50 to 60 youths.
One of the fights even spilled into the area near the roller coaster, where at least a dozen young men were seen grappling and throwing punches as bystanders filmed the disturbance next to the coaster tracks.
This chaotic situation prompted park officials to shut down the Sky Rush coaster.
According to court records, officials indicated that these events severely disrupted operations at Hersheypark, triggering emergency measures that halted rides.
Some of the participants in the brawl were chased off by police through a side gate, only to re-enter the park via the main entrance and engage in fighting once more around 7:30 p.m.
After a three-month investigation, charges were filed against numerous youths for offenses such as disorderly conduct, simple assault, conspiracy, theft, failure to disperse, aggravated assault, and participating in a riot.
Omar Ibraham, 19, Jerome Ross, 18, and Quanique Williams, 18, all from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, have been publicly identified as the only adults charged in connection with the brawl.
Williams faces multiple felony charges, including rioting and assault, as detailed in a probable cause affidavit reviewed by local media.
Additionally, Ibrahim and Ross are charged with theft, accused of stealing wristbands meant for minors and using them to access the park, which reportedly cost about $90.80 for a day pass.
The three individuals received summonses, but as of Tuesday evening, no arrests had been made. They are expected to appear in court on July 7.
Hersheypark had just officially launched its 120th season hours earlier.
The park emphasized its zero-tolerance policy, stating that individuals who disregard park rules would be banned from its premises.
When questioned, Hersheypark appeared to lack specific policies for escorting minors during visits.
In contrast, several other amusement parks, including various Six Flags locations, have recently established stricter age guidelines. For instance, under a new policy announced for Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, all guests aged 17 and below must be accompanied by a chaperone who is at least 21 years old after 4:00 p.m.
