65% Unlikely to Buy Electric Cars as They Strand Drivers in Winter Freeze

An overwhelming majority of Americans said Tuesday they are unlikely to consider buying an electric vehicle (EV). The poll was conducted amid a winter freeze across the United States, with electric vehicles leaving drivers stranded in their homes or on the side of the road.

rasmussen report released The poll found that 65% of American adults say they are unlikely to consider purchasing an EV for their next car purchase, and some say they are “not at all likely” to purchase an EV. It was found that 37% of respondents answered, Fewer than 3 in 10 Americans said they would consider buying an EV.

In particular, the poll shows that EVs continue to be status quo for the country's wealthy.

About 52% of people making at least $200,000 said they were likely to buy an EV as their next car, with 33% saying it was very likely.

Meanwhile, more than 7 in 10 working and lower-middle-class Americans with annual incomes between $30,000 and $50,000 say they are not considering purchasing an EV, and some say they are “not at all likely” to purchase an EV. 46% of the respondents answered “No.”

The poll was conducted as winter freezes rage across the U.S., leaving EV drivers stranded at home or on the side of the road. In the Chicago, Illinois, area, for example, EVs are piling up at Tesla charging stations as temperatures keep cars from moving.

A Consumer Reports study conducted late last year found that EVs have nearly 80% more problems than gasoline-powered cars that use traditional internal combustion engines.
