An 80-year-old man said he fought back after a random assailant hit him in the head inside a Georgia grocery store late last month.
Felix Dessel He told WAGA-TV The attack happened around noon on Aug. 22 while the victim was grocery shopping at the Kroger at the intersection of La Vista Road and North Druid Hills Road in Toco Hills, DeKalb County.
“I was picking bananas when someone attacked me. I was shocked and a bit dizzy.”
Dessel told the station the man hit her over the head with a soda can, leaving her with a “very large bump.”
Dessel ran toward the suspect and fought back, WAGA reported, citing a DeKalb County police report.
Investigators said the suspect then threw multiple objects at Dessel, who also said the suspect punched and kicked him, the station reported.
But Dessel told WAGA that a Kroger employee saw what was happening and told both him and the gunman to leave the store, and the suspect then fled.
“I said, 'I can't leave the store, I've just been attacked,'” Dessel told police. “I was picking bananas and someone attacked me and I was in shock and a little staggered around.”
The attack was captured on video, but WAGA reports that DeKalb County police and Kroger have refused to release it, and investigators have not made any arrests.
The station reported the following statement issued by Kroger regarding the incident: “The safety and security of our customers and employees is our top priority. We cooperate with local law enforcement, as requested, in all ongoing investigations.”
Dessel didn't have to go to hospital after the attack, but he believes more should be done to protect customers, WAGA reported.
“They need security. Tragic events are going to happen there,” Dessel told the station. “I'm very happy we got through it.” [The attacker] He needs to be locked up and he needs medical and psychological help.”
Meanwhile, Dessel told WAGA, “It's hard for me to sleep because I'm doing reviews.” [the attack]The wounds will fade [pointing to his head] This is a different story.”
