A 90-year-old California woman was fired from her volunteer role with the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society for 60 years because she “didn’t understand the pronouns.”
Fran Itkoff, a longtime advocate for people with MS, lost her husband to the degenerative disease 20 years ago, and in addition to her volunteer work with national organizations, she has assumed the position of president of the Long Beach-Lakewood MS Support Group. During her decades of selfless work, she has received multiple awards from nonprofit organizations.
bomb statement interview TikTok’s collaboration with Liv’s Chaya Reichik exposed the complete misjudgment Itkov experienced after being asked to introduce himself by gender pronouns.
Watch the video:
“I was confused. I didn’t know what it was or what it meant,” he said, recalling his reaction when a group representative asked him to use pronouns in his email signature. she said.
“I saw it in some letters that came after the person’s name. But I didn’t know what it meant,” the older woman continued. “So when I finally talked to her, I asked her what that meant…and she said it meant all-encompassing, but I didn’t understand that. .”
Itkoff said the organization sounded like “if you’re just letting women in, you’re labeling women instead of men.”
Within days, Mr. Itkov was fired.

The email from National MS Society Community Engagement Manager Kali Kulor accused the veteran volunteer of violating the nonprofit’s “diversity, equity, and inclusion” guidelines.
“Unfortunately, given the circumstances, we have made the difficult decision to ask you to resign from your volunteer position effective immediately,” the email said.
Mr. Kumol also severed cooperation between Long Beach-Lakewood MS Group and the national society.
Itkov said he was “completely shocked” to receive such a message.
“I can’t believe it…I had to read it several times to make sure I understood what she was saying,” she told Ms. Lyczyk.
Itkov’s daughter, Elle, called the move to fire her mother because “excluding a 90-year-old disabled woman who has been volunteering for 60 years” does not seem consistent with the organization’s mission of inclusivity. called it “sarcasm.”
“Literally, her only purpose was to help MS patients and find a cure. Literally, that’s all she does,” she added.
After the interview went viral, the National MS Association further reinforced its decision to fire Itkov. In an email to other volunteers, the group’s executive vice president of general counsel implied that the 90-year-old man was fired because no one else should feel “unsafe” in the workplace.

Adding fuel to the fire was the sudden resignation of Cindy Zagboiro, the association’s president and CEO.
In an email obtained by Reichik, Zagiboiro declined to address the controversy surrounding Itkov’s firing, instead saying he was “excited” to move into retirement.
Exclusive breaking news: President @mssociety unexpectedly decided to retire. From what I’ve heard from employees, this happened completely out of the blue. It is unknown if this is related to this story.

To put the icing on the cake, the National MS Society tripled its decision to administer Itkov on Thursday. memo:
Recently, volunteer Fran Itkoff was asked to leave her role due to comments that were deemed inconsistent with our inclusion policy. Fran has been a valued member of his team of volunteers with us for over 60 years. We believe that our staff acted with the best of intentions and did their best to solve difficult problems. As an organization, we are in ongoing conversations about ensuring our diversity, equity, and inclusion policies evolve in line with our mission, and we are reaching out to Fran to help with this goal. It’s a schedule.
Lajczyk posted a shocking statement, also noting that the group had removed the board members’ web pages, presumably for “hidden” purposes.
