Officers Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Suffolk County Incident

Authorities reported that Suffolk County officers shot and killed a man armed with a knife who allegedly rushed from a wooded area to attack a victim.

The incident occurred around 8:30 AM on Sunday at the Center Reach Strip Mall, where a 44-year-old man had already been stabbed in the neck.

Officials stated that 29-year-old Emilson Joan Ordnes Vanegas emerged from the woods along Middle Country Road, brandishing a 10-inch knife and shouting as he charged towards the officers and the wounded victim.

According to Suffolk County Police Chief Kevin Catalina, “[Ordnes-Vanegas] was crying and approached the victim, who was receiving treatment, and attempted to stab him again.”

In response, an officer drew his weapon and fired at Ordnes-Vanegas as he attacked.

Unfortunately, Ordnes-Vanegas succumbed to his injuries, while the victim was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for medical care.

New York Attorney General Tish James has initiated an investigation into the incident to evaluate the necessity of the officer’s use of deadly force.

Chief Catalina stressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “If the officer hadn’t acted swiftly, the victim could have been fatally stabbed.”

The investigation will focus on police body camera footage, forensic evidence, and eyewitness accounts to assess whether the shooting conformed to legal standards for justified force.

So far, it appears that only the two men were involved in this violent confrontation near the strip mall, which contains various shops and eateries. The underlying motive for the attack remains unclear.
