Rookie mystic discovers she made the All-Star team in an unexpected manner

Editor’s Notes:This story is part of the series profiling the 2025 WNBA All-Star Team. Now, let’s get acquainted with Sonia Citron.

Sonia Citron didn’t expect to become a WNBA All-Star in her rookie season.

“I was really surprised,” Citron shared in a conversation with SB Nation on Monday. “It’s not something I thought would happen at all. I’m still processing it, especially this year—it hasn’t fully hit me yet.”

The No. 3 overall pick had a remarkable rookie year with Washington, averaging 14.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. She shot 45.5% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range. Her sharp shooting also earned her a spot in Friday’s three-point competition.

“Sonia Citron was built for this,” read a tweet from the WNBA following a significant game where she sank her fourth three-pointer with less than 20 seconds remaining against Dallas, leading to an 91-88 OT victory.

Citron found out about her All-Star selection in an unconventional way—through an Instagram message from Gabby Williams, a forward for the Seattle Storm.

“It was a different experience, but cool nonetheless. It’s a unique story to share,” Citron noted.

She appreciates the Mystics’ playing style, which aligns well with her skills, and believes she can exceed her own expectations.

“I don’t think there were any specific expectations this year. I aimed to embrace all opportunities while navigating ups and downs to help my team win,” she said.

Sonia Citron is aiming for a playoff spot with the Mystics

The Mystics have won three consecutive games and hold an 11-10 record right now. Citron aspires for them to secure a spot in the postseason. They’re currently in the seventh seed, but the Las Vegas Aces, in ninth, are just a game behind.

As for areas of personal improvement, she isn’t focusing on anything specific at the moment.
