Hochul Responds to Mamdani’s Surprising Primary Win

Governor Kathy Hochul remarked on Wednesday that the unexpected primary success of Zoran Mamdani, a leading contender for New York City mayor, has essentially made her a “head therapist.”

This victory has sent ripples through the Democratic Party, prompting Hochul—who hasn’t formally backed Mamdani—to signal her intention to oppose tax increases for the wealthiest individuals and large corporations should he be elected.

“I told hundreds of business leaders, ‘Listen, nothing’s going to happen to this city without me realizing it and getting involved,'” she stated during an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I seem to have become the best therapist, so I’m telling everyone, ‘We’re fine.’ It probably comes from my mother,” she added, indicating a blend of humor and seriousness.

Hochul expressed her desire to act as a calming influence, saying, “Don’t panic everyone. Play the process and let the voters decide then deal with it.”

Mamdani’s platform, which includes raising taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents and making controversial comments about Israel, has provoked considerable public backlash.

Hochul revealed that she discussed two key issues directly with Mamdani during a recent conversation, emphasizing the importance of reassuring the business sector.

One of the primary challenges she identified for Mamdani is mending his connection with Jewish New Yorkers. “You have a lot of healing that relates to the Jewish community,” Hochul advised him, implying that some of his past remarks have been harmful.

“So if you can, straighten the relationship and make them realize that if you become mayor, we don’t know the outcome,” she cautioned, underscoring the uncertain political landscape ahead.
