Biden’s Former Adviser Critiques Administration’s Border Policies
On Tuesday, Blas Nuñez-Neto, a former adviser on border issues, expressed in the New York Times that the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis has been inadequate, mentioning how this might have aided Donald Trump’s reelection efforts.
“The first step in addressing any crisis is to recognize it,” he stated.
Nuñez-Neto noted that the significant rise in illegal crossings at the southern border during the initial years of Joe Biden’s presidency constituted a crisis. He believes that the failure to act promptly and acknowledge this issue resulted in a loss of voter confidence, ultimately benefitting Trump.
Having served as the assistant secretary for border and immigration policy under Biden, he shared his experience dealing with what he described as a “tidal wave” of illegal entries in 2021.
He pointed out that while the economic fallout from the pandemic played a role, there were key issues contributing to the crisis, notably the “lack of resources” at the border and challenges in expelling individuals to countries like Venezuela.
Nuñez-Neto elaborated that delays in selecting crucial policies have hampered efforts. “By the time Biden and the Democrats began collaborating with Republicans on immigration reforms in late 2023 and early 2024, political concerns had completely intertwined with the presidential election, making it tough to negotiate a solid, bipartisan bill,” he said.
He acknowledged that while the border may be safer under the current administration, this improvement has come at the expense of “eroding the constitutional order.” He argued that Congress should intervene to be more accommodating to legal applicants while also enforcing stricter measures for those living in the U.S. illegally.
In his view, it’s essential to strike a balance: “We are not just a nation of immigration, but also a nation of laws. We need a system that recognizes both aspects. Without this, we can expect another border crisis at any time,” he concluded.
Despite his critique, Nuñez-Neto’s statements prompted a strong backlash online, with some mocking him on social media. The former department he worked for even took a jab at him, saying, “I was a humble dumpty. Here’s how to sit on the wall.”
Illegal border crossings reportedly peaked during Biden’s term, with 249,785 encounters logged in December 2023. In contrast, under Trump, border encounters dropped by over 90% shortly after he took office.
