Trey Wingo Voices Concerns About ESPN’s Current Direction

Former ESPN host Trey Wingo isn’t shy about expressing his dissatisfaction with how the network is currently running its programming.

He recently responded to complaints regarding the absence of familiar faces like Stephen A. Smith and Pat McAfee from the airwaves. Wingo echoed these sentiments, stating he’s not quite aligned with the path ESPN has taken.

“First off, I want to see them succeed, because I have wonderful memories and many great friends still working there,” Wingo shared on social media. “But in this case, he’s right. It used to be like a glorious buffet where you could pick and choose what you wanted to watch.”

Wingo was a part of ESPN’s lineup from 1997 until 2020. In recent years, several flagship programs such as “Around the Horn” and “The Lines” were canceled, making way for shows featuring Smith and McAfee at the forefront of the network’s programming.

As it stands, ESPN has transitioned to producing four talk shows, with half showcasing McAfee and Smith. This marks a decrease from 2017 when seven similar shows were in rotation. The duo also features prominently on SportsCenter, which airs for ten hours each day.

Citing his experiences, Wingo reflected: “Sure, I have plenty of cherished memories and connections from my time there, and it’s worth noting that I want them to thrive. But honestly, it feels different now—like a banquet where you only get to choose between chicken or fish.”

Additionally, McAfee’s popularity has been a constant in his roles across various programs, drawing both attention and scrutiny, particularly during events like the MLB Home Run Derby.

Wingo’s comments reveal a broader shift at ESPN, which seems intent on embracing a new wave of talent, even if it means leaving behind some of the old guard.
