Trump Calls for End to Bolsonaro’s Trial
Former President Donald Trump is urging an immediate halt to the trial of Jair Bolsonaro, the ex-president of Brazil. Bolsonaro is currently facing scrutiny as investigations continue into actions he allegedly took following his electoral defeat in 2022, which some suggest were aimed at retaining power. Just this week, Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, met with officials at the White House.
In a video shared on social media, Trump indicated that “a decision has been made” about possible sanctions against Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. He expressed his support for Bolsonaro, stating, “I have seen the terrible treatment you are receiving at the hands of an unfair system that opposed you. This should be over soon!” This was part of a letter he wrote to Bolsonaro.
Trump conveyed his shared concern about free speech being threatened in both Brazil and the U.S., which he attributes to the actions of the current government.
Interestingly, last week, Trump warned Brazil of a potential 50% tariff on its products due to an ongoing lawsuit against Bolsonaro. Meanwhile, a significant report compiled by federal police in Brazil detailed an alleged conspiracy involving Bolsonaro and others to undermine the electoral process post-defeat. The report was submitted to prosecutor Paulo Gonette and claimed that Bolsonaro’s faction sought to manipulate public distrust in the electoral system while inciting unrest in the capital.
In March, Brazil’s Supreme Court accepted charges against Bolsonaro, including allegations of extraordinary plots, such as attempting to poison his successor and harm a Supreme Court judge. Should Bolsonaro be convicted of coup-related charges, he could face a maximum of 12 years in prison. Other charges could lead to even harsher penalties.
In his correspondence with Bolsonaro, Trump expressed hope for a shift in Brazil’s political direction, urging an end to attacks on opponents and the restrictive censorship he noted. “I watch a lot,” Trump added, casually mentioning his interest.
Bolsonaro, for his part, has rejected the allegations against him and stated he has “zero” concerns about the accusations.
According to reports, the U.S. is also evaluating the imposition of sanctions against Judge Moraes, who is overseeing the case against Bolsonaro, under the Magnitsky Act. This law allows the U.S. to sanction foreign individuals accused of corruption.
Amid these tensions, Trump reiterated his threats concerning tariffs, emphasizing that reciprocal measures would take effect if Brazil imposed them first. “Respect is good; I like to offer mine and I like to receive it,” he remarked, referring to the ongoing diplomatic exchanges.
