House approves legislation that Maxine Waters referred to as a 'complete cryptocurrency scam'

House Advances Cryptocurrency Regulations

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed three bills aimed at regulating cryptocurrency. This decision came despite significant pushback from Rep. Maxine Waters, a leading Democrat from California and a prominent member of the House Financial Services Committee.

Waters criticized the legislation, labeling it as “a full-fledged crypto fraud” and alleged that Republicans sought to benefit former President Donald Trump, who has been associated with a digital currency named $Trump.

One of the key proposals, the US Stablecoins Act, which aims to establish clearer guidelines for Stablecoins, has previously gained Senate approval.

Legislative Breakdown

The bills were passed with a notable bipartisan vote of 308-122 in the House, although only 12 Republicans sided with the majority. The Democrats showed a near split, with 102 voting in favor compared to 110 against.

The Clarity Act of the Digital Asset Market also received attention, passing with a vote of 294-134. This act delineates new federal roles concerning digital currencies.

Another significant piece, the Anti-CBDC Oversight National Act, prioritized by Republicans, just barely passed with a 219-210 vote, obtaining the backing of two Democrats.

Concerns had previously arisen among conservatives about the bill’s potential implications for an anti-CBDC regulation designed to block the federal government from launching its own digital currency. Nonetheless, this matter will not move forward in the Senate.

Interestingly, some conservatives managed to connect this anti-CBDC bill with the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Reactions and Future Outlook

After the vote, cryptocurrency advocate and House Majority Whip, Tom Emmer from Minnesota, remarked that these laws create a foundation for future growth and innovation in the U.S. Meanwhile, Rep. Troy Downing emphasized the necessity for bipartisanship in matters related to digital currency.

“Bipartisanship is key. It’s something we should all aim for as we approach a new era,” Downing commented.

Rep. Randy Feenstra from Iowa also indicated that these regulations would, in his view, offer new avenues for American families to build wealth.

Continued Opposition

Maxine Waters continued to voice her opposition, arguing that these bills do not safeguard national interests or promote transparency during a press conference before the vote.

“Let’s be clear. These bills are invitations for Trump. They do not protect us,” she stated. Waters further suggested that if Trump were upset about international influences, he should oppose a bill that enables a system she described as fostering corruption in the crypto sphere.
