Democrats say the public has a right to know if Colbert was canceled due to politics

Warren and Schiff Push for Transparency After CBS Cancels Colbert’s Show

Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) are set to make a notable announcement regarding CBS, resulting in the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show.” This decision, they claim, is aimed at increasing transparency in the network’s operations.

This development follows Colbert’s public challenge to CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, concerning a $16 million lawsuit involving former President Trump.

Just three days after Colbert’s remarks, Warren tweeted, “CBS cancelled Colbert’s show just three days after Colbert called on Paramount to address the ongoing lawsuit with Trump. The US deserves to know if his show was cancelled for political reasons.”

Colbert’s show had featured Schiff as a guest on the Thursday prior to the cancellation announcement, and he voiced similar concerns on social media, stating, “If Paramount and CBS finished the late show for political reasons, the public deserves to know.”

Following this, Warren shared a clip from Colbert’s recent monologue where the comedian discussed an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris regarding the 2024 presidential election. Colbert had criticized Paramount Global over its financial arrangements with Trump, tying it to the company’s merger with Skydance, which is currently under review by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Colbert remarked, “This kind of complex financial settlement with government officials has a technical name in the statutory world. It’s a big fat bribe.”

CBS later responded, emphasizing that the decision to cancel “The Late Show” stemmed solely from financial reasons unrelated to the show’s content or performance. They expressed admiration for Colbert and acknowledged the difficulty of the decision.

Colbert has hosted the show since 2015, taking over from David Letterman. Under his leadership, it has become the most-watched talk show in its timeslot, averaging nearly 2.5 million viewers.

The comedian is well-known for his sharp critiques of Trump, often inviting Democratic guests. Speculation has arisen regarding his future at CBS amidst discussions of the merger and the settlement involving Trump.

There was a post from Trump suggesting the cancellation of Colbert’s show, calling for CBS to terminate his contract.

In the meantime, Colbert addressed the news during an episode, expressing disbelief. “It’s not just the end of our show, but the end of ‘Late Show’ on CBS. I’m not being replaced. All of this is gone.”
