New York Mayoral Candidate Remains Silent on ‘Communist’ Label
In Astoria, New York, Zoran Mamdani, who is running as a Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City, sidestepped queries from Fox News Digital regarding accusations of being a communist and whether he intends to distance himself from his previous leftist statements.
On a Friday morning outside his Queens residence, Mamdani’s demeanor remained serious as he faced questions. Despite a crowded field that includes current Mayor Eric Adams, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, his responses—or lack thereof—stood out.
When asked if he had anything to say to those who label him a communist or if he would retract statements, Mamdani laughed but didn’t provide a direct answer.
Mamdani’s Father’s Controversial Associations
Mamdani’s father has connections to anti-Israel groups, which some claim have ties to terrorist activities that defend suicide bombings.
High-profile figures like Donald Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr., have labeled Mamdani as a “communist.” They claim this is a significant shift for the Democratic Party, pointing out that Mamdani has advanced in primary elections.
“This is the moment when the Democrats have truly crossed a line. Zoran Mamdani has emerged as a self-proclaimed communist, and it’s concerning,” Trump argued.
Trump Jr. echoed these sentiments during a Fox News Digital interview, suggesting that the situation might serve as a “major marketing opportunity” for Florida, hinting at political fallout.
Social Media Posts Stirring Controversy
Revealed social media activity from Mamdani’s father includes radical anti-Israel sentiments, which have further fueled criticism against Mamdani himself.
Mayor Eric Adams critiqued Mamdani’s earlier comments, recalling a tweet from May 2020 where Mamdani hinted at Marxist principles. Adams stated that “Karl Marx authored the Communist Manifesto,” solidifying his criticism.
Mamdani’s propositions regarding housing have also raised eyebrows. In resurfaced clips, he stated, “We should ensure everyone has a home.” He questioned the current system that leaves many without adequate housing.
Internal Democratic Concerns
Mamdani’s refusal to clarify or amend his statements could pose issues for the Democratic Party. Some insiders believe there are “red flags” as they assess his position within the party.
During his campaign, Mamdani has suggested alternatives to the traditional housing system, alluding to a guarantee of homes that could challenge notions of private ownership. He remarked, “If there’s a system guaranteeing housing, regardless of what you call it, it’s preferable to the current situation.” This remark is indicative of views aligned with leftist ideologies.
Mamdani is expected to meet with House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries this Friday in New York City, further escalating the conversation surrounding his candidacy.
