Omar Fateh Receives DFL Endorsement for Minneapolis Mayor
The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party has officially endorsed Omar Fateh in his campaign for Mayor of Minneapolis, a decision made public on Saturday.
Fateh shared the news on social media, expressing his appreciation for the backing of the DFL and for Democrat Mayor Jacob Frey. In his statement, he said, “I am deeply honored to be a candidate for mayor, representing the DFL and reflecting what residents of Minneapolis desire amid broken promises and political challenges.”
The DFL hasn’t responded to inquiries about the endorsement.
Comparisons to Zoran Mamdani
Fateh, who is a 35-year-old Muslim democratic socialist like Zoran Mamdani from New York City, has drawn parallels to him. A child of Somali immigrants, Fateh aims to raise the minimum wage and improve affordable housing, emphasizing a commitment to combat “police violence” if elected.
Frey Critiques DFL’s Support
Mayor Frey has criticized the DFL’s decision, suggesting the endorsement process was unduly influenced and not representative of the broader city populace. His campaign spokesman, Sam Schlenberg, stated, “The election should represent the views of all voters, not just a select few involved in making this decision, especially given the irregular conduct of the process.”
Schlenberg continued, “Voters will face a clear choice between Senator Fateh and Mayor Frey’s leadership this November, and we anticipate showcasing our vision to them.”
