Mayoral candidate Mamdani gains attention for correcting name pronunciation

Zohran Mamdani’s Response to Mispronunciation at Press Conference

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic candidate for mayor in New York City, recently showcased his media savvy when White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt mistakenly referred to him as “Zamdani” during a press conference.

“My name is Mamdani. Mamdani,” he declared in a video that accompanied a catchy tune on TikTok. The clip, which plays with Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl,” caused quite a stir online.

In response to a question about Donald Trump’s lack of backing for mayoral candidates in New York, Leavitt remarked that Trump “doesn’t want to see Zamdani, a known communist who advocates for the abolition of private property and police defunding.” She added that if Mamdani were elected in November, it would spell “disaster for New York and the country.”

The Power of Social Media in Mamdani’s Campaign

Mamdani stands to be not only New York City’s first Muslim mayor but also its first millennial mayor if he secures a victory this November. Interestingly, he met with House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Chuck Schumer recently, but neither has yet committed support for his campaign.

In addition, Mamdani convened with Democratic leaders in Washington, D.C., including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who hosted a “Communication and Organization Breakfast” for candidates. Ocasio-Cortez has been a crucial early supporter of Mamdani’s candidacy, alongside progressive allies like Senator Ayanna Pressley and Senator Bernie Sanders, who endorsed his platform.

Last week, during a preliminary discussion in New York City, Mamdani didn’t shy away from addressing former Governor Andrew Cuomo, snapping, “My name is Mamdani” after Cuomo mispronounced it multiple times. This moment has gone viral, as TikTok users cleverly paired it with an upbeat track, reminiscent of how other political figures have leveraged social media for awareness.

His campaign heavily utilizes platforms like TikTok and Instagram, with content designed to resonate with the city’s youth. His posts stand out—think cinematic filters, engaging music, and appearances from celebrity supporters, all capturing millions of views.

In a recent remark, Trump expressed skepticism about Mamdani’s chances, while Mamdani’s campaign spokesman responded by turning the criticism back on Cuomo, highlighting the irony of any support he might receive from Trump.

Trump, meanwhile, has been vocal about his concerns regarding Mamdani’s platform, stating, “As the US President, I’m not going to let this communist madman destroy New York.” His strong rhetoric signifies the tension that can often accompany political races.
