"How Many More Lives Will It Cost?" Kristi Noem Criticizes Democratic Sanctuary Mayors After Meeting Injured Agent

Homeland Security Secretary Criticizes New York City Mayor

On Monday, Secretary of Homeland Security Christine Noem delivered a passionate eight-minute statement during a news conference in New York City. She announced the arrest of a second illegal immigrant tied to an attempted robbery involving a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officer.

Noem, along with Tom Homan from the Border Border Area and other senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security, visited CBP officials who faced an attack late Saturday night. In her opening remarks, Noem directed her criticism toward New York City’s Democratic mayor, Eric Adams, as well as his counterparts in Boston, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

“There’s no justification for allowing such dangerous individuals to roam the streets of New York City,” Noem stated. “This person had been arrested four times before but was released, putting residents at risk due to the mayor’s sanctuary city policies. It’s tragic that this officer is now in the hospital, fighting for his life, as a direct result of the inaction from the city’s leaders.”

Noem went on to encourage all mayors and governors protecting illegal immigrants to reconsider their policies. “Their responsibility is to keep the public safe and allow families to pursue their American dreams without fear,” she said.

“Seeing the impact of Mayor Adams’ policies on New York—families struggling is heartbreaking,” Noem continued. “What’s the situation under Mayor Wu in Boston? The unrest in Los Angeles is evident. We’ve got Mayor Brandon Johnson in Chicago, dealing with violence in underprivileged communities—the result of policies that protect criminals instead of innocent citizens.”

Noem later identified the second suspect as Christian Aibal Velour, an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic. She mentioned the broader implications of illegal immigration, highlighting how it has risen as a significant issue in the ongoing 2024 campaign, particularly in connection with a series of violent crimes. For example, a 23-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador was arrested for a murder in Maryland, and two men in Houston were charged with the rape and murder of a child.

The dialogue around illegal immigration continues to unfold, as recent incidents have brought increasing scrutiny to policy decisions made by local leaders.
