On ESPN’s “First Take” Monday, Stephen A. Smith criticized President Trump’s comments about the Washington football team’s name, describing them as “petty” and evasive.
Smith suggested the president was trying to deflect attention from growing public dissatisfaction by calling for the DC team to revert to the “Redskins” name. He stated, “I think the president is being a bit superficial. No matter how he tries to frame it, a lot of people are not happy with current events—issues like tariffs and border policies are still on people’s minds.”
He acknowledged that those on the political right might feel satisfied with some developments but insisted, “I’ll leave the political commentary to others.” However, he deemed Trump’s remarks as trivial, pointing out that many of his supporters are concerned with the government’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein situation and desire more clarity surrounding questionable financiers and sex offenders.
“Just because he’s catering to his base doesn’t mean it really addresses the wider concerns, including transparency about the Epstein Files,” he added.
In his remarks on Sunday, Trump urged the Cleveland Guardians to revert to their previous name, the “Indians,” asserting that there is significant public support for such changes among both teams that have undergone rebranding in recent years.
Trump posted on Truth Social, “The Washington ‘All-All’ should rename the Washington Redskins. This is something that resonates… The Cleveland Indians are one of the original baseball teams with a rich history.”
He expressed concern that the heritage and reputation of these teams are being diminished. “Times have changed from just a few years ago. We’re a nation filled with passion and common sense,” he remarked.
The Washington team announced its decision to drop the Redskins name in July 2020 after a review process and went by the “Washington Football Team” until its rebranding in February 2022. Similarly, the Cleveland team discontinued the “Indians” name following the conclusion of the 2021 season.
In a follow-up post on Sunday, Trump claimed his statement about the Redskins stirred considerable attention, he said, “If they don’t bring back the names, I might need to intervene regarding their new stadium.”
