Young DHS Appointee Responds to Criticism

Thomas Fugate, a 22-year-old appointed by Donald Trump, has recently faced scrutiny due to his age and perceived lack of experience in a role at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Speaking with Fox News Digital, Fugate addressed these criticisms directly.

Although he serves as a special assistant, some news sources inaccurately claimed that he leads the DHS’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3), which focuses on terrorism and targeted violence prevention. Fugate and the DHS have both refuted these assertions.

“All decisions are made by policy leaders,” Fugate explained, emphasizing that his role is not as prominent as portrayed in certain media outlets.

Shooting Incident and DHS Overview

In related news, a second suspect was arrested in the shooting of a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, a situation highlighting ongoing concerns regarding safety and violence.

Fugate clarified that he does not oversee CP3, instead describing it as a small office focusing on grant management with efficient but limited resources. He noted that many concerns about the office stem from misunderstandings about its scope of work. “It’s not about running anything large or complex,” he said, suggesting the focus should be on the specifics rather than broader generalizations.

The DHS has characterized Fugate’s position as “low-level,” further downplaying the significance of his role in the organization.

Response to Political Criticism

Some officials have come to Fugate’s defense, arguing that the criticism he faces is a distraction from discussions about budgetary issues and waste within the CP3 program under the current administration. “This smear campaign is really about something else,” one supporter stated, attributing the critique to deeper political motivations.

Fugate, who began his career at the DHS focusing on border and immigration issues before temporarily supporting CP3, pointed out that he previously interned at the Heritage Foundation and graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio in May of last year.
