4-year-old injured in mountain lion attack at Olympic National Park

Port Angeles, Washington – A 4-year-old was taken to a hospital in Washington following an encounter with a mountain lion last weekend, as reported by the National Park Service (NPS).

The incident occurred near the Victoria Overlook area of Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. According to a service press release, this site is known for its stunning mountainous views.

Authorities mentioned that the child, whose identity has not been disclosed, was walking on a popular hiking trail with family when the attack happened.

The attack was reported around 3:15 PM on Sunday, prompting a rapid response from park rangers and paramedics who arrived to assist the injured child.

As of Monday, the child was recovering at a trauma center in Seattle.

Following the incident, park rangers, along with their canine units, initiated a search for the mountain lion. On Monday, the NPS stated that the lions had been “departing and dispatched,” which typically indicates that measures were taken to eliminate the threat.

A park official reassured the public by stating, “There is no current threat to the public.”

The incident is still under investigation, and anyone who may have witnessed it is encouraged to reach out to the authorities by calling 888-653-0009 or emailing nps_isb@nps.gov.

So, what should you do if you come across a mountain lion? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service offers several tips. One of the key recommendations is to appear larger and more intimidating. This could involve opening your jacket, raising your arms, and even throwing objects without turning your back. It’s advised not to run from a mountain lion; instead, try to maintain your ground and safely pick up any children without turning away.

A comprehensive list of mountain lion safety guidelines can be found at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s website.
