Congress advances a bipartisan measure to stop Mexico's unauthorized takeover of American property

Congress Pushes for Protection of American Interests Overseas

In a recent bipartisan initiative, Congress is focusing on safeguarding American interests beyond its borders.

Republican lawmakers from Texas are taking the lead, aiming to shield American assets from foreign threats and what they describe as “irrational” or “discriminatory” practices. This movement is backed by Democratic Rep. Terry Sewell of Alabama, along with Republican Sen. Bill Hagerty of Tennessee and Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia.

“The state should not be allowed to bully American companies without consequences,” states Pfluger, a Texas representative. He’s emphasized that American firms should operate abroad without fearing arbitrary state actions that infringe on their property rights. He argues that strong U.S. property laws are crucial for ensuring such actions are curtailed, thereby protecting American businesses against unfair appropriation.

Pfluger added, “Defending American property rights overseas is essential for economic growth and national security. I urge my colleagues in Congress to rally behind this crucial legislation, sending a clear message that the U.S. will not tolerate unfair treatment of American enterprises.”

Recent incidents that have raised concerns include those involving the Balkan Materials Company, a significant construction assembly producer. Though American, Vulcan has operations in both the U.S. and Mexico, which makes its role vital to the infrastructure of both nations.

The company has been facing challenges; specifically, it has been operating a limestone quarry in Mexico since 1986, which was, quite alarmingly, closed in May 2022 due to illegal actions by the Mexican government. This closure jeopardized supply lines to the U.S., thus risking American jobs.

“I strongly condemn the Mexican government’s actions towards Balkan Materials Company. It’s great to see a bipartisan effort from the Senate addressing this issue,” Hagerty said. He criticized the current Mexican administration for what he perceives as blatant theft from substantial American companies.

Hagerty further asserted, “The nation must not intimidate American companies without repercussions. Our proposed law addresses the Mexican government’s unlawful attempts to seize U.S. assets.”

Similarly, Pfluger and Hagerty’s Democratic allies voiced their apprehensions, highlighting that such Mexican governmental actions harm both business and diplomatic relations. Kaine remarked, “The unfair targeting of the U.S.-based Balkan Materials Company, which provides jobs for over 1,000 people in Virginia, damages the trust of investors and affects our countries’ relations. It’s important that we introduce this bipartisan legislation to halt illegal asset seizures by foreign governments.”
