Former President Donald Trump is advocating for a criminal probe into former President Barack Obama, suggesting that Obama was the orchestrator behind the Russiagate scandal. Trump’s call arises from new allegations claiming that members of Obama’s administration perpetuated narratives of a Trump-Russia conspiracy in the aftermath of the 2016 election.
According to reports from the National Intelligence office, there is said to be “overwhelming evidence” indicating that Obama and his national security team engaged in a sustained investigation concerning Trump and Russia, especially after Trump’s unexpected victory over Hillary Clinton.
Representative Tulsi Gabbard has asserted that officials from the Obama administration allegedly “fabricated and politicized” intelligence to suggest that Russia was attempting to manipulate the 2016 election, despite contradicting information from intelligence agencies.
Documents have surfaced that name key figures from Obama’s presidency, including his National Security Council chief and other top officials like former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and CIA Director John Brennan. Gabbard has referred these findings to the Department of Justice, although specifics about the criminal referrals remain undisclosed.
When pressed on which individuals should be investigated, Trump asserted that Obama was at the center of these actions, mentioning figures like Biden, Comey, and Clapper as part of the group implicated. He claimed that all evidence supports his allegations and pointed to a wealth of documents at his disposal.
Trump criticized the origins of a controversial report written by Christopher Steele, which was funded by the Clinton campaign. He describes this report as baseless and argues that it laid the groundwork for a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) against Carter Page, a former Trump campaign aide. At the time, many in the intelligence community viewed the claims as mere “internet rumors.” However, figures like Comey and Brennan allegedly pushed to incorporate these stories into formal intelligence assessments.
Reflecting on these developments, Trump expressed disbelief at how such events unfolded, stating that nothing of this magnitude had occurred in American history. Additionally, he noted that a briefing from Brennan in 2016 suggested that a scandal involving Russian influence could benefit Clinton’s campaign.
Currently, investigations into Comey and Brennan are ongoing, with FBI Director Kash Patel spearheading the inquiry into their actions surrounding the 2016 election.
