Biden Campaign Responds to Drug Allegations Ahead of Debate
The Biden campaign recently addressed questions about whether President Joe Biden would be using performance-enhancing drugs before his upcoming debate with President Donald Trump, asserting that such claims are desperate lies from Trump’s camp.
In an interview that aired on Monday, Hunter Biden spoke candidly about his father’s performance during a previous debate. He mentioned that Biden’s lackluster showing was influenced by his use of Ambien, a medication typically used for insomnia. “We know what happened during that debate,” Hunter stated. “He had been traveling extensively and, at 81 years old, he gets tired.” He likened his father’s demeanor on stage to “a deer in headlights,” reflecting on how that fueled negative narratives.
According to reports, Biden’s aides are preparing to highlight Trump’s vulnerabilities in the debate, aiming to showcase Biden’s strengths instead.
On June 26, a day before the debate, the Biden campaign was asked about the president’s potential use of performance-enhancers. Responses from Biden’s team were evasive, avoiding a direct answer twice. Meanwhile, Trump’s allies were calling for Biden to undergo drug testing, pushing a narrative that perhaps aimed to cast doubt on Biden’s mental acuity.
A spokesperson for the Biden campaign remarked, “Donald Trump is terrified of his own toxic agenda, so he and his allies are boldly lying.” When pressed for a clear answer in a follow-up, the campaign suggested their earlier statement sufficed.
In discussing Ambien, it’s important to note that the drug slows down brain activity and helps with sleep, clearly not a performance booster for debates.
As the debate drew closer, Biden had been preparing intensely, reviewing videos of his prior missteps. Trump, on the other hand, pushed for Biden to submit to drug tests, suggesting a lack of faith in his competitors’ abilities.
“Let’s get Biden tested for drugs,” Trump had suggested on social media, further fueling the debate over the president’s fitness for office.
When asked about whether Biden would take such drugs for the debate, Fox News Digital reached out but received no response from Biden’s office at the time. However, Trump’s campaign did respond, asserting, “President Trump has natural stamina and does not need drugs to perform.” They questioned what Biden might be concealing.
Hunter Biden’s recent interview has stirred conversations about his father’s preparedness for the election amid ongoing concerns about his cognitive abilities. Biden himself has scoffed at the notion of using performance enhancers, humorously commenting during a past event that he felt “pretty jacked” even as he drank water.
Despite the preparations, Biden’s previous debate performance was criticized harshly, leading to calls from some Democratic allies for him to reevaluate his candidacy. Notably, figures like David Axelrod and George Clooney have voiced their concerns over his viability in the race.
Hunter Biden’s remarks seem to reflect the frustrations within the party as they attempt to rally behind his father amidst a challenging campaign landscape. As for using performance-enhancing drugs, the Biden team has maintained a stance of silence while addressing unfounded claims.
