WNBA Players Advocate for Fair Compensation
Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham recently addressed reporters, delivering a somewhat blunt message to the WNBA and Commissioner Kathy Engelbert. When asked about the length of the WNBA season, she highlighted ongoing negotiations between the league and the players’ unions, particularly regarding compensation. “We can tell Kathy to pay us, then we can argue,” Cunningham remarked.
Cunningham represents just one of many players in the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) who are pushing for better pay amid talks for a new contract with the league.
During Saturday’s All-Star Game, players wore T-shirts stating “Pay what you owe us” during warm-ups, featuring the WNBPA logo.
League officials met with players on Thursday, but unfortunately, a deal wasn’t reached. Chicago Sky star Angel Reese was among those who criticized how the league is handling these negotiations. She shared, “It was eye-opening for me. It wasn’t something I was happy to hear, rather than hearing things and listening to the language of things.”
New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu mentioned the players weren’t intending to settle for the “lowest” offer in negotiations. However, Phoenix Mercury player Satau Sabbary characterized the league’s latest proposal as “a face slap.”
It’s clear that the voice of the players is essential, especially when it comes to speaking up about their rights and compensation. After all, if not now, then when? It’s a critical moment for the future of women’s basketball.
