An expert in the field explained that the Long Island man who tragically died in an MRI accident had no real chance to escape due to the immense force of the magnetic field. Kevin McAllister was wearing a 20-pound chain around his neck, which could be yanked by the Nassau Open MRI machine with a force estimated to be “hundreds of pounds,” according to Dr. Emmanuel Canard.
“We’ve encountered a lot of challenges,” Canard, who leads Magnetic Resonance Services at Pittsburgh Medical Center, remarked. He noted that the power of these magnets is far beyond what one might expect, describing them as an incredibly potent magnet paired with a large piece of iron.
McAllister reportedly found himself pinned against the machine for more than an hour. He had entered the MRI room with an engineer while assisting his wife with her knee examination, as his family recounted.
At a distance of merely inches from the machine, it suddenly pulled him in with such intensity that it could have caused a neck injury, Canal stated.
His family claimed that McAllister was guided into the MRI room by a technician who didn’t advise him to remove the heavy metal chain. Tragically, he was pronounced dead a day after this bizarre incident.
“With his health generally okay, he might have had some existing cardiovascular issues. The unexpected excitement of the situation could have triggered a heart attack,” Canal suggested.
McAllister’s wife shared a heart-wrenching account of his last moments. “His body was lifeless,” she told News 12 Long Island. “He leaned into my arm, and I can’t shake that image from my mind.”
Even with extensive experience in healthcare, Canal expressed that unusual deaths like this are exceptionally rare.
“It’s quite uncommon for someone to die from interacting with a strong magnetic field. Probably fewer than a handful have occurred since MRIs became a diagnostic tool in the early 1980s,” experts commented.
His stepdaughter claimed that the technician had warmed up the machine and instructed McAllister on helping his wife, but neglected to remind him to remove the chain he was wearing, which ultimately led to this tragic outcome.
“While my mother was on the table, the engineer left the room and asked her husband for help. He forgot to tell him about the chain,” she wrote on GoFundMe.
