Mother Arrested for Leaving Child in Hot Car
Authorities report that an 18-year-old mother from Utah placed her distressed two-year-old daughter in a locked car while she watched the “Smurfs” movie in a theater.
Tripura Merriex took her crying daughter out of the film showing at Regal Cinema in Lake City, Utah, on Saturday. After not being able to soothe her, she placed the child in a 2002 Cadillac Escalade.
On that day, the heat index in Lake City reached 94 degrees, according to local police.
Responding officers found the child in the car “sweating and crying in agony,” as reported by local news outlets.
When Merriex exited the theater, she seemed quite nonchalant about the situation, behaving as if it wasn’t serious, according to the police report.
She claimed to have only forgotten her daughter momentarily, but witnesses narrated a different version of events.
Eyewitnesses stated that Merriex, who attended the movie with her siblings, intentionally placed the child in the SUV and checked on her regularly during the screening.
Mirriex’s decision to keep the kids in the car raised significant concerns among observers, particularly since she continued to watch the movie without apparent worry.
She was subsequently arrested and charged with felony child neglect, currently held at the local jail.
Fortunately, the two-year-old has recovered from what could have been a disastrous situation, with family members informing news outlets that she is now okay.
Tragically, at least 15 children have succumbed to heat-related incidents in cars in the U.S. this year alone. The National Council for Safety notes that, on average, about 37 children under 15 lose their lives annually to heatstroke in vehicles.
