Roy Black, lawyer for Jeffrey Epstein and Kennedy Smith, passes away at 80

Roy Black, a well-known defense attorney from Miami, passed away at 80, as confirmed on Tuesday. His clients included prominent figures like Jeffrey Epstein and William Kennedy Smith. Black died at his home in Coral Gables on Monday.

Howard Slebnick, Black’s legal partner, expressed his grief, stating, “For over 30 years, Roy has been my teacher, mentor, and friend. The losses I feel are immense, both personally and professionally.”

Black’s reputation in Miami was legendary, with fellow attorney David O. Marx likening him to Michael Jordan in the legal field. Marx emphasized Black’s dedication, noting, “He worked harder than any lawyer I know, and I miss him. His influence on criminal defense is immeasurable.”

Notably, Black represented William Kennedy Smith during his 1991 trial for assaulting a woman in Palm Beach; Smith was ultimately found not guilty.

In his career, Black also secured victories for clients like pop star Justin Bieber and race car driver Helio Castroneves. Bieber faced charges for driving under the influence and drag racing, while Castroneves was acquitted of attempts to evade over $2 million in taxes.

Black’s client list extended beyond the famous; he also represented the late Rush Limbaugh and others, with reports indicating his involvement in high-profile cases that impacted Miami, including a riot linked to an acquittal in 1989.

Black leaves behind a significant mark in the legal world, remembered for his skill and dedication as an advocate in high-stakes defense cases.
